Lamont said he plans to continue mandating the wearing of facial coverings indoors through at least the end of the school year as the state begins ramping up vaccinations in younger residents.

“I think we're going to mandate that you continue to wear the mask in school through the end of the school year," Lamont said. "It gives students, teachers, and parents some confidence.

“I'll have a discussion with the legislature about that. And probably, we're going to require indoor masking a little bit longer, until you're vaccinated, in crowded public places. But that's it."

This week, Lamont’s office said the state Department of Public Health continues to review guidance on masks, including the recommendations from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Lamont said that beginning on Wednesday, May 19, the day before his executive orders put in place during the pandemic expire, masks will not be required outdoors.

Come Thursday, May 20, it will be up to the legislature to determine whether masks will still be required indoors.

Beginning on May 19, all restrictions on businesses are also largely expected to be lifted, provided Connecticut continues seeing improved COVID-19 numbers. The Department of Public Health will also issue recommendations for indoor and other large outdoor events, as well as clarifying guidance on masks.

“(We are) working with my friends in the legislature, that we wear your mask a little bit longer when we are indoors,” Lamont said during a COVID-19 briefing this week. “Whether it’s a mandate or guidance, I will figure that out with the legislature in the next few weeks.”
